The Problem With Most Vitamin C Formulations
- L-ascorbic acid oxidizes fast. The most common form degrades when exposed to light, air, and heat. That $80 serum turns orange in 6 weeks and stops working.
- It's often irritating. High concentrations (15-20%) of L-ascorbic acid sting, burn, and cause redness — especially on sensitive or mature skin.
- It requires low pH. L-ascorbic acid only works below pH 3.5. That's acidic enough to disrupt your barrier.
- It can't share a bottle. That low pH fights with niacinamide and peptides, so brands either leave them out or sell them to you separately.
- Packaging is rarely adequate. Unless it's in an airless, opaque pump, it's oxidizing from the day you open it.
What Actually Works

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is a vitamin C derivative that stays stable at skin-friendly pH (roughly 5 to 7). It doesn't need the acidity that makes L-ascorbic acid sting, and it doesn't brown on your shelf — tested purity holds for months where L-ascorbic acid degrades in weeks.
Here's the part nobody talks about: because there's no pH conflict, it can sit in the same formula as niacinamide, peptides, ectoine, and bakuchiol. L-ascorbic acid can't. That's why most vitamin C serums are a vitamin C serum and nothing else — and why you end up buying four bottles.
The best vitamin C serum is the one that's still vitamin C when it reaches your face, and gentle enough that you're still using it in month six. Ours is both.
