Hyaluronic acid is marketed as the ultimate hydrator. It holds 1,000 times its weight in water. Every serum contains it. Every influencer swears by it.

But in the wrong conditions, hyaluronic acid pulls water OUT of your skin instead of into it.

How hyaluronic acid actually works:

It's a humectant. Humectants draw moisture from their environment. In humid climates or over damp skin, hyaluronic acid pulls water from the air into your skin. Great.

But in low-humidity environments (winter, air-conditioned rooms, planes, dry climates), there's no moisture in the air to pull. So hyaluronic acid does what it's designed to do: it pulls moisture from the nearest source. Which is the deeper layers of your skin.

You've just dehydrated yourself from the inside out.

Why your hyaluronic serum makes your skin feel tight:

You applied it to dry skin in a dry room. It pulled water from your dermis to your epidermis, then that water evaporated into the air. Net result: tighter, drier skin than before you started.

This is why hyaluronic acid serums often feel amazing for 20 minutes, then your skin feels parched an hour later.

The molecular weight problem:

Not all hyaluronic acid is the same. High molecular weight HA sits on the surface and can feel sticky. Low molecular weight HA penetrates deeper but can cause more trans-epidermal water loss if you don't seal it properly.

Most products don't tell you which molecular weight they use or why it matters.

What to do instead:

If you use hyaluronic acid, apply it to damp skin and immediately seal it with a moisturizer that contains occlusives. Don't let it sit alone on your face.

Or skip it entirely and use glycerin or beta-glucan—humectants that don't pull water as aggressively from your skin when humidity is low.
